Charles Harry Hammond was born in Ixworth (Thingoe Q1-1890 4A:850) son of Herbert and Annie Elizabeth HAMMOND (née ABLETT).
1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Thetford Road, Ixworth with his father Herbert HAMMOND [37] farm labourer born Ixworth and his mother Annie E [26] born Badingham. 1901 census...Aged 12, he was "near the Woolpack", Pakenham, with his parents and brothers John W [9] and Percy A [7] both born in Ixworth. 1911 census...Aged 21, farm labourer, he was at Hall Farm Cottages, Little Livermere with his parents and brothers John William and Percy Arthur, both farm labourers.
On the pension card his mother was at Church Cottages, Timworth.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. He served firstly in the 9th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
The battalion had been in operations near Le Quesnoy on 22nd, having 25 casualties, then at 9 am on 23rd they were relieved by the 7th Royal Sussex and marched to billets at LES CHOQUAUX, having just three killed that day.
